Scaramouche sets sail with new standing rigging

Girls-in-townGreig City Academy and their student led crew have set sail once again on board their Frers 45 Scaramouche having undergone an extensive winter refit including an all new standing rigging package donated by Ocean Yacht Systems (OYS).

Project Scaramouche, aims to be the first student led team to enter the Fastnet in 2017. Heading up the project is head of outdoor education at Greig City Academy, Mr Jon Holt who helped the academy purchase Scaramouche in July 2015. Having competed in a number of races, and even winning one, there was a lot of work to do on the boat to make sure it was seaworthy and capable of achieving their goals. A winter refit was therefore in order.

Greig City Academy is in inner-city London, where 73.1% of the students are deemed to be disadvantaged and 62.4% have English as an additional language, and sailing has really transformed their lives. Inspired by the project and their aspirations, OYS is supporting the project by donating the standing rigging and associated fittings. The new rod rigging was made to length and the mast stepped by OYS service agents Advanced Rigging in Hamble, UK.

"As a state school teacher I want our students to have the same opportunities as that of public school kids and so set about making the yachting project work.” Explains Jon Holt. “My first priority has to be safety and the second is performance because being competitive in races is what hooks youngsters in. It became clear early on to me that there were problems with the rigging despite assurances from others that it was fine. The costs of new rigging were simply beyond our budgetary capabilities and we were faced with the real prospect of not being able to continue. Ocean Yacht Systems then came along, listened to what we had to say and their simple advice was the most heartening I could have heard. Put simply they said that we had enough pressure without worrying about whether the very youngsters we are trying to help would get hurt. It summed up my concerns and to suddenly have that understanding from an industry expert was amazing. OYS then provided our project with completely new standing rigging, this has left me speechless. Generosity, expertise and understanding like this has made sailing fully accessible to kids who would never in their wildest dreams have access to the sport. They have not just helped a project; they have facilitated life changing experiences for what will be hundreds of students from largely disadvantaged backgrounds.”

Jon has been sailing for many years and believed that it was too exclusive. In his view, OYS has re-written the history book of sailing and shown that even the top people in the industry can reach down and pull up those who feel they cannot get there.

“The students and teachers leading this project are a real inspiration,” commented Mark Barwell sales director at Ocean Yacht Systems. “We are pleased to give something back to sailing and help the Scaramouche team. We wish them every success as they train towards their goal of entering the Fastnet 2017.”

Scaramouche will be competing in the JP Morgan Round the Island Race on July 2, starting and finishing off Cowes, Isle of Wight.
