Rolex Regatta Success for Ocean Yacht Systems Equipment

Ribelle wins porto cervoThe summer of 2017 has seen Ocean Yacht Systems’ (OYS) equipped boats compete in high profile events and we are delighted to report that during the events they have entered they have all been top of the podium.

August saw the Rolex Fastnet Race, where Scaramouche equipped with new standing rigging and tie rods donated by OYS took to the race course. The crew, comprising of eight students from Greig City Academy in Haringey, London, two teachers and three qualified skippers joined the record breaking fleet of 368 boats to race from Cowes to the Fastnet Rock and then to Plymouth for the finish. Their goal was to make it to the start line and to be the first state school to compete in the race. They achieved so much more than this, and they told their story through video blogs every step of the way. On Friday 11 August, not only did they cross the finish line and become the first state school to do so, they also went on to win the Musto Media Prize. A great result for a fantastic project, highlighting that sailing is an accessible sport and not just for the elite.

September was time for the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, where there were two boats equipped by OYS competing. The Malcolm McKeon 33m Ribelle was competing in the Supermaxi Class, whilst the Reichel Pugh Yacht Design Galateia was competing in the Wally Class.

Mark Barwell and Ian Crowden from OYS were out racing on Ribelle. With performance cruiser racing in mind, weight was an important factor and OYS designed, manufactured and supplied custom hydraulic sail control cylinders and carbon / titanium bow and stern thrusters. The OYS equipment was designed to keep her at optimum racing without compromise. The styling was very important and the vang was colour matched to the tint of her deck windows. Ribelle sailed a consistent series to win her class with a day to spare.

In the Wally Class, Galateia is equipped with a lightweight OYS thruster, designed, and manufactured specifically to help keep her at optimum racing weight. Galateia went on to win her class after 5 days of racing.

Fair winds and following seas Scaramouche

Scaramouche-fastnet-OYS-riggingGood luck to the crew of Scaramouche in the Rolex Fastnet Race which sets sail on Sunday 6th August 2017.

Back in early 2016, Mark Barwell Sales Director was listening to a talk from Greig City Academy students at Lymington Town Sailing Club and how 8 students from inner city London were preparing to take their Frers 45 Scaramouche, and be the first student led team to take on the Rolex Fastnet Race.

Safety is paramount for teacher Jon Holt. Following a survey of the rigging with OYS Service Agents Advanced Rigging, Ocean Yacht Systems donated all new standing rigging and associated fittings to the project.

The rigging was supplied in June 2016, and since then Scaramouche has gone on to qualify for the Rolex Fastnet Race, and we look forward to watching them set off of Sunday.

“We are proud to have been able to help such an inspiration group of students, we look forward to seeing them reach their goal. Fair winds and following seas Scaramouche,” comments Mark Barwell.
